TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bandung Police have sent home hundreds of people during yesterday’s May Day that were detained for vandalism on a number of public properties.

“They have been released early this dawn,” said Nanang Kosim, spokesman for Gerak (anti-capitalism movement) to Tempo today, May 2.

Around 619 people from various groups were detained at the West Java Police Headquarters in Sumedang for allegedly being involved in public misconduct. They consist of members of Gerak, college students, campus press, Bandung Students Alliance, and community movement members across Bandung.

The youths arrested also consist of high school and junior high students with 605 male members and 14 female members.

The West Java police spokesman Sr. Comr. Trunoyudo could yet confirm the exact number of people who had been released and who were still under police custody, where they were allegedly punished by being stripped off their clothes and had their head shaved.
