30 Dead in Bengkulu Landslide and Floods

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced that the death toll from the floods and landslides in Bengkulu as per Wednesday, May 1, reached 30 people with another six people missing.

Nearly the entire area of Bengkulu was hit hard by heavy rainfall from April 26 to April 27. “The highest death toll was from Central Bengkulu District with 24 victims, with three deaths each in Bengkulu City and in Kepahiang,” said BNPB Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a written statement on Wednesday, May 1.

He also announced that the region’s disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) is constantly providing healthcare services and logistics distribution for areas that are affected by the natural disaster.

According to the BPBD records, the landslide and floods damaged settlements, schools, agriculture, and public infrastructures, with 554 houses severely damaged by the floods.

Thousands of hectares of corn fields and a large number of palm oil trees were damaged by the disaster. The region’s electricity is also still down and is predicted to sustain up to Rp144 billion in damages.
