TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of members of polling station working committees (KPPS) who died and fell ill continues to increase. As of date, a total of 225 workers died during and after the 2019 Indonesia elections, while those who fell ill jumped by 587 people.

“As many as 1,470 officers have fallen ill,” said General Election Commission (KPU) commissioner Viryan Aziz in a text message, Friday, April 26.

Until Thursday, April 25, at 6 p.m. Jakarta time, 1,695 workers who were mostly volunteers had to deal with grief.

The commission targeted to pay compensation for those polling station workers who died and fell ill within the next ten days. The KPU secretary-general Arif Rahman Hakim said the Finance Ministry agreed with the aid distribution.

“We are still revising the budget optimization,” Arif said, adding that his side will instantly deliver the compensation to the regional KPU by the time the ministry disbursed the budget.

The commission earlier said it had proposed Rp30-36 million for those KPPS members who died while on duty in the 2019 general elections.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani had yet detailed the amount of the aid, arguing the government was still calculating it as referred to the prevailing law.
