JK Urges Simultaneous Election Reviewed after KPPS Members Death

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) said the rules overseeing 2019 general elections need serious evaluation following the deaths of numerous polling stations working committees (KPPS) members due to fatigue.
He asserted that stakeholders must rethink their decision on holding another simultaneous election in the next five years.
“Whether the simultaneous election needs to be held again in the next five years just to see hundreds die again? This must be proportional,” said Jusuf Kalla in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 23.
Indonesia’s 2019 General Elections involve voting for the presidential election and legislative elections for the central and regional parliaments.
Nationwide simultaneously held election is mandated by Constitution Court’s verdict No.14/PUU-XI/2013 and evolved into Law No.7 (2017) on the elections (UU Pemilu). However, Jusuf Kalla believes the verdict, which the law is based on, can evaluate its simultaneous aspect.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) reported that 90 KPPS members had died either during or after the elections.
Jusuf Kalla said the House of Representatives (DPR) should be able to revise the UU Pemilu to avoid more casualties in the future. “The DPR must decide,” said the Vice President.
