TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi acknowledged that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had ordered him to handle the recurring issues of traffic congestions and road accidents for both land and air transportation during the upcoming “Mudik” or Ramadan homecoming.

“Air transport focuses on tariff issues, while land transportation is about traffic congestions and road safety,” said Minister Budi on Sunday.

On the matter of suppressing the number of road accidents, the minister was visibly optimistic on being able to reduce or even eliminate traffic congestions with the existence of the new set of toll roads.

Past regulations that will be introduced again in the 2019 Ramadan homecoming is limiting the number of vehicles operating on public roads and applying speed limits, especially in toll roads.

“Especially motorcyclists, 70 percent of road accidents are from motorcycle accidents,” warned the Minister.

According to the Transportation Ministry’s Director General of Land Transport Budi Setiyadi, the Ramadan homecoming will commence on May 31, 2019, and will predictably see it peak on June 9, 2019.
