TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed his grief upon the persecution incident against a 14-year-old junior high student in Pontianak.

“We are all sad, we are all in grieve for the bullying,” said the President as noted in the press release issued by the Protocol, Press, and Media of Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday, April 10.

Jokowi demanded National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian take firm action yet wise considering the perpetrators are still underage. “I have ordered Police Chief to firmly deal with this case according to legal procedures,” he noted.

According to him, the physical abuse against the female student revealed the change in public interaction via social media, and so that must be watched out. He then suggested parents look after their children.

“Do not get stuck in the dynamic of social interaction while we are not ready for that,” Jokowi added.

The former Solo Mayor pinned hope parents, teachers, and people, in general, could together respond to every existing change and correct any wrongful thing occurred in the society.

“This must be managed hand in hand. Because there is a change, there is a transition in social interaction between communities due to the openness of social media,” he stressed.

However, Jokowi did not deny there was input on the revision of regulation concerning juvenile. The most vital thing, he asserted, culture, ethics, norms, and religious value in Indonesia strongly against bullying.

The case of physical bullying captured public attention after it became viral across social media through a hashtag #JusticeForAudrey.
