TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A research team from the University of Pattimura Ambon recently discovered a foreign object inside a dead ocean sunfish or Mola Mola after the creature got stranded in the Ambon coast.
The team from the university’s maritime and fisheries sciences faculty was led by Profesor Dr. Jacobus Wilson Mosse who dissected the dead marine animal on Monday, April 1. The autopsy was attended by BKSDA and Maluku’s LPSDPL since day one the Mola Mola was found.
“We don’t know yet, but this foreign object is inside the Mola Mola’s intestine. Other than that object it was normal,” said Mosses while showing the firm dark-colored object.
Mosse’s team likened the object to a shrunken part of a land animal that they suspected to be from a cow’s lungs, “it might have been thrown by a resident to the ocean and was consumed by the fish,” said Mosse. This is the first sample taken from a Mola Mola following two occurrences involving the fish.
