TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The devastating flash flood that hit Sentani, Papua, on Saturday, March 16, displaced 4,728 people from their homes that have taken refuge across six refugee posts.

“The largest of them all is the refugees at BTN Gajah Mada with 1,450 people,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman on Monday.

The other five refugee posts are located at Gunung Merah main refugee camp with 1,273 people, BTN East Bintang with 600 refugees, HIS Sentani School with 400 refugees, SIL Sentani with 300 refugees, and Doyo Baru with 203 refugees.

The flash flood was a direct effect of the extreme rainfall that showered over the region for seven straight hours.

“The local government’s mitigation was launched since the first day of the flash flood,” Sutopo explained.

Meanwhile, victims tally continue to rise with 79 people killed and 43 missing. Most casualties were identified to be from the Jayapura District and Jayapura City.
