TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank of Indonesia (BI) is pushing for banks to accelerate the migration from magnetic tape ATM cards to those that are embedded with chips. This is mainly to prevent crimes such as card skimming practices.

“In order to improve its security, banks are hoped to quickly migrate from magnetic stripes to chip-based ATM cards,” said Filianingsih Hendarta, Bank Indonesia’s Head of the Payment System Policy Department to Tempo on Monday.

Responding to BI’s calls, CIMB Niaga claims that its ATM cards are currently 75 percent chip-based; “We agree that it must be done as quickly as possible to minimize frauds at ATMs,” said Lani Darmawan, CIMB Niaga Consumer Banking Director.

Meanwhile, Senior Vice President (SVP) Consumer Deposit Group PT Bank Mandiri Muhammad Gumilang said that the company is attempting to accelerate the migration to chip-based cards and is eyeing on the end of this year to reach 50 percent migration for all Mandiri ATM users in November of 2019.

The Metro Jaya Police recently uncovered a card skimming scheme by Ramyadjie Priambodo on a BCA ATM card who managed to steal Rp300 million.
