TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta’s commuter line operator Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) called for passengers to no longer be apathetic against sexual harassment cases that have happened aboard KRL (commuter line) trips.

KCI Corporate Communication Vice President Eva Chairunisa said that there were 34 reported cases of sexual harassment in 2018 taking place aboard commuter lines. Unfortunately, only 20 victims reported their experience to the police.

“This is a rise compared to 2017 where there were 25 cases of sexual harassment with none of it ending up as a police report,” said Eva in the event on sexual harassment awareness at Sudirman Station, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 12.

According to Eva, the reports she receives suggest there are cases where perpetrators are immediately captured by authorities in each station before continuing the cases to court. However, some perpetrators are also unfortunately difficult to be tracked following late reports filed by victims.

Based on Tempo’s field observation, the KCI campaign highly urges people to be proactive against sexual harassment cases happening on commuter trains with verbal appeals and handing out flyers informing about sexual harassment.
