TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Migraine is a kind of headache that causes strong pain and symptoms in addition to head pain, such as nausea, blurred vision, and others that may beset the daily activity.

Rather than taking a pain killer immediately, Tempo has outlined five simple tips to deal with migraine as reported by Medical Daily Thursday, March 7.

  1. Drink coffee or tea

When a migraine hits you, drinking the right amount of caffeine can relieve the pain. Make sure to limit the intake to prevent caffeine withdrawal.

  1. Apply a cold or hot compress

Place the compress across your forehead or the back of your neck for fifteen minutes, take it to rest for another 15 minutes. You can either wrap ice in a towel or dip a clean towel to warm water as your compress. You may also try taking a warm bath or shower.

  1. Do not tie hair

External pressure on your head, such as a tight ponytail, hat, headband, or swimming goggles, may cause head pain.

  1. Do not chew gum

One of the unknown causes of migraine is chewing. Try not to chew gum, crunchy and sticky foods, biting nails or pen to avoid a headache.

  1. Avoid bright lights

Bright or flickering lights may trigger a migraine. Close your window with dark curtains, wear sunglasses outside or anti-glare screens to reduce the pain.
