TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Women’s Day that is commemorated today on March 8, 2019, has become an ideal momentum to address several issues that continue to challenge women in Indonesia.

House of Representative (DPR) member Eva Kusuma Sundari said that one of the challenges faced by Indonesian women is education.

“I’m afraid that the current education system does not tempt students to think critically,” said Eva at the Erasmus Huis in South Jakarta on Wednesday.

This situation, she says, contributes to the rapid spread of disinformation in the form of hoax and fake news. Many women fall victim to this type of manipulative information.

“We have to do something now with our education system to prevent future generations from being easily manipulated,” said Eva who assessed that the lack of quality in Indonesia’s education system as the main contributor.

According to Eva, women who are unable to think critically will certainly face numerous problems in their lifetime, which includes building apathy toward gender equality and aggressively opposing female counterparts.

She hopes many more women will be willing to enter the political world to better represent the female gender and all of the issues to bring change into the lives of Indonesian women.
