TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) leader Yahya Cholil Staquf called for Indonesians to respect a nation’s unity and the concept of governance it adopts. During a national meeting among Ulema, he says Muslims shall not interfere with any type of government adopted by another country.

Yahya argues that transnational ideologies such as Caliphate often pushed by hardline groups such as Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) must be fought against.

“We see such movements and ideologies only produce chaos across the globe and must be resisted against and return to religious values that uphold humanity, grace, and good morals,” said Yahya in Banjar, West Java on Thursday, Feb. 28.

He said that the caliphate agenda pushed by HTI is similar to international communism that forces one type of governance across the globe.

The meeting also talked about offering the world PBNU’s moral position and also maintained its views on the status of non-Muslim citizens in a country. "They have equal rights as citizens as any other Muslims,” said Yahya.
