TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia, has expressed enthusiasm about Pope Francis' scheduled visit to the country from September 3-6, 2024, as reported by Antara.

PBNU Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf conveyed this sentiment in Jakarta, stating, "PBNU is proud to welcome Pope Francis to Indonesia, and we extend our congratulations to Indonesian Catholics on the visit of Pope Francis."

Known familiarly as Gus Yahya, Staquf revealed that discussions about the Pope's visit began in 2018 but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said, with the world now recovered, the confirmation of his visit brings great joy. "Alhamdulillah, it now seems confirmed and scheduled that the Pope will visit Indonesia," Gus Yahya said.

Preparations are actively underway by the Indonesian government, in collaboration with the Vatican and relevant stakeholders.

Gus Yahya also highlighted recent collaborations between PBNU and the Vatican, which have included initiatives like the R20 to ISORA global conferences. These conferences have brought together religious leaders worldwide to foster a global humanitarian movement.

He expressed hope that the Pope's visit "will bolster communication between NU and the Vatican and enhance joint efforts for global humanity."

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored the significance of this visit, noting its potential to promote tolerance, unity, and peace across all religious communities in Indonesia.

Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas confirmed the visit, stating, "Based on a letter from the Vatican received by the Indonesian Government, Pope Francis will be present on September 3, 2024. This is certainly an honor for the Indonesian people".
