Jakarta to Introduce Policy Curbing Plastic Bags

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the Jakarta Environment Agency, Isnawa Adji, said discussions on a gubernatorial decree aimed at curbing the use of plastic bags were nearing completion. The governor’s decree (Pergub) is scheduled to be introduced in two weeks.
“Hopefully in the next week or two [the decree] will be complete,” said Isnawa in South Jakarta today.
According to Isnawa, the decree was actually ready to be introduced but was deferred following public input on the inclusion of several additional rules—such as tax incentives for plastic producers.

Earlier reports said Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan assured plastic producers that the policy would not create an anti-plastic society, but rather reduce the use of disposable plastic bags.
“Plastic tumblers would not be a problem, don’t let us become an anti-plastic movement,” said Anies Baswedan.
The capital said there would be a period of education and introduction relative to the policy for six months before it takes complete effect.
