TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan voiced his concern and fear of the Meikarta housing project and its effect on the quality of Jakarta’s main water supply, Citarum River.
The Meikarta housing project is currently under construction at Cikarang, West Java.
“This has grabbed the attention of Jakarta’s provincial government since there is currently a massive Meikarta housing project being built there,” said Anies at the BPK headquarters on Monday, February 18.
According to Anies, the position of the housing project is within close vicinity to the west water passage that passes Kalimalang in East Java. This alone increases the chance of Meikarta contaminating the Citarum River that supplies 81 percent of Jakarta residents’ daily water needs.
However, the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) previously presented its evaluation report of Jakarta and West Java’s administration on managing the CItarum River. Their evaluation found that the pollution level at Citarum is well over the limit.
