Luhut Expects Airbus to Produce Aircraft Parts in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has asked France-based commercial aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, to produce aircraft parts in Indonesia.
The request was conveyed during a meeting with Asia-Pacific Airbus president Jean-Marc Nasr in the ministry building in Jakarta, Monday, February 4.
“I ask them to produce aircraft parts and tires in Indonesia,” said Luhut, noting that this would support the use of the country’s raw material and empower domestic workers.
However, he said he still did not know the necessary capital for Airbus to realize this plan.

The minister further said that he encouraged Airbus for a tie in aircraft maintenance. Two state airliners Lion Air and Garuda Indonesia have opened Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) in Batam and Bintan, respectively.
“They want a synergy for the maintenance of their Airbus 320 aircraft,” Luhut added.
Airbus, he continued, would visit Indonesia by bringing concrete recommendations with regards to the partnership in Batam and Bintan. According to the former presidential chief of staff, Airbus was interested in the plan since it would slash 20 percent of its production costs—cheaper than in Singapore.
