TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government signed a partnership deal with five operators to provide the country with high-speed internet satellite capacity.

“It’s to answer the need for fast internet connection,” said Anang Latif, Communication and Informatics Ministry’s Director of Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Board (BAKTI) during the signing on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The five chosen companies in the partnership deal to realize 21 Gbps internet include PT Aplikasinusa Lintasarta, PT Indo Pratama Teleglobal, Konsorsium Iforte HTS, PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara and PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia.

The partnership is worth Rp7.5 trillion for a span of 5 years from 2019 to 2024 to answer Indonesia’s demand for fast internet connection in regions known as the 3T (outer regions that are left behind). This deal is seen as a substitute upon waiting for the completion of the country’s multifunction satellite construction in 2023.

“In mid-2019, quick internet access would be introduced in Indonesia,” said Anang.

By leasing satellite capacity, BAKTI is eyeing on reaching 10,000 areas in Indonesia’s outer regions.
