KPU Exposes Ex-Corruptor Running in Legislative Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Committee (KPU) will expose former corruption convicts running in the legislative election 2019.
“We categorize it based on whether the legislative candidate had been sentenced guilty in a corruption case,” said Pramono Ubaid, KPU Commissioner at the KPU headquarters on Wednesday.
According to Pramono, the Law mandates legislative hopefuls incriminated in corruption cases to expose themselves, especially those that are sentenced to over than 5-years imprisonment.

He said that the KPU will announce legislative hopefuls who were legally named as former corruption case convicts prior to the existence of the Law on Corruption (Tipikor) that was set on 1999.
Law No. 7/2017 on the General Election mentions that legislative candidates must not be convicted corruptors that have been sentenced to more than 5 years in jail. But this excludes legislative hopefuls who openly and publically admit their past status as former convicts.
Pramono said that KPU is currently conducting background checks and cross-verification on the legislative hopefuls running in the 2019 general election. “We cannot just hastily announce these people,” he said.
