BMKG : Tasikmalaya Earthquake Sparked by Subduction in South Java

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 4.8 magnitude tectonic earthquake hit the region of Tasikmalaya at 22:04 western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Monday night which was felt across Sukabumi, Pangandaran, Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Ciamis.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in its latest report said that the earthquake with its epicenter at 62-kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya, West Java, did not cause a tsunami.

The earthquake originated from the depth of 21 kilometers and was measured to be II-III in the MMI scale which was enough to be felt by people, shake several household objects, and was also noticeable by vehicles operating on roads.

According to South Tangerang’s Region II BMKG Chief Joko Siswanto, the earthquake is classified as a shallow quake caused by the subduction at Java’s southern region.
