TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the number of victims killed by Sunda Strait tsunami amounted to 437 people.

"A total of 426 bodies have been buried, while nine bodies have not been identified," said Sutopo at Graha BNPB, Monday, December 31.

As of date, said Sutopo, the joint SAR team continued to search since many were still missing. The search was conducted in a number of locations affected by the tsunami, which was on the west coast of Banten and South Lampung.

Other than the death toll, Sutopo added, as many as 16 people were reportedly still missing, while 14,059 others were injured and 33,721 people were displaced.

"Many people suffer injuries are still being treated in hospitals. There are still many refugees who need help. The aid distribution is hampered by muddy roads," Sutopo mentioned.

Sunda Strait tsunami occurred nine days ago. The high tidal waves caused by the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau have severely damaged the coastal areas of Banten and South Lampung. Not only houses and public facilities but also hotels and tourism sites.

BNPB noted that Sunda Strait tsunami caused damage to 2,752 houses, 92 lodges and stalls, 510 boats and ships and several other public facilities.
