TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The acting director of the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Serang Dr. Drajad Prawiranegara, Sri Nurhayati, said that a number of hospital staffs charged an illegal levy for the handling and returning the bodies of the Sunda Strait tsunami victims.

"There are six forensic staffs. But the police is currently investigating the case,” Sri said via a phone call to Tempo, Saturday, December 29.

Previously, several residents complained about the illegal levy. A representative, Badiamin Sinaga, said they were asked to pay more than Rp6 million for six bodies consisting of four adults and two babies.

Sri said the illegal levy charged by six people was personal action and was done outside the hospital policy. “That is done without the knowledge of the management,” she said.

According to Sri, the levy outside of hospital management can be seen from existing receipts since they were not official receipts from RSUD Serang.

“We have used the pay system. So there are no levies in installations,” she said.

Sri said that these six people would get sanctions from the hospital if they were proven to have carried out this illegal levy. The sanction, she said, could be dismissed as RSUD Serang staff.
