BNPB: Sunda Strait Tsunami Death Toll Rises to 429

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho announced the temporary total death caused by the Sunda Strait tsunami that amounted to 492 deaths up to Tuesday, December 25, 13:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

“A total of 492 people died, which is likely to increase. The worst affected so far is Pandeglang Banten,” said Sutopo in the BNPB press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 25.

Entering the third day of evacuation, the agency recorded that the Sunda Strait tsunami injured 1,485 people, caused 154 to be missing till this day, and forced 16,082 people to take refuge.

The government emergency response period will be effective for 14-days since December 22 and last to January 2019. Meanwhile, Lampung’s emergency response period will officially end on December 29 but will be extended if necessary.

The unexpected and undetected Sunda Strait tsunami happened on Saturday, December 22 and ransacked five regions that comprise Pandeglang and Serang in the Banten Province, South Lampung District, Pesawaran and Tanggamus in Lampung Province.
