Nearly 12,000 People Displaced by Sunda Strait Tsunami

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As of Monday, December 24, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that 11,687 people have been displaced from their homes due to the giant waves that hit the Sunda Strait last Saturday.

The agency also recorded that 281 people have died and more than 1,000 injured. Most of the victims were found in Mutiara Carita Cottage, Tanjung Lesung Hotel, and Sambolo Village.

"Fifty-seven are still missing," BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a written statement.

The tsunami that struck the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung provinces had damaged 611 houses as well as dozens of hotels and villas. Shops and boats were also destroyed.

Overall, the tsunami affected five districts; Pandeglang, Serang, South Lampung, Tanggamus, and Pesawaran.

The entire coast line from Carita Beach, Panimbang Beach, Teluk Lada Beach, Sumur, and Tanjung Lesung saw the severest damages. A total of 10 sub-districts in Pandeglang were heavily destroyed by the tsunami.
