Sunda Strait Tsunami, Ministry Provides Public Kitchens

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Social Affairs has prepared public kitchens and psychosocial support service (LDP) team at five points in the Banten province for communities affected by the Sunda Strait tsunami. The five points are in Labuan, Carita, Panimbang, Tanjung Lesung, and Cinangka.
“At each point, there are three services by the Ministry of Social Affairs, namely public kitchens, LDP, and emergency tents for refugees,” said Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang, in a press release received by Tempo on Sunday, December 23.
Agus said the public kitchen could operate with a production capacity of 3,000 wrapped rice in one day. The manager, he said, consisted of the Ministry of Social Affairs’ Disaster Alert Cadets Team (Tagana) and the local Social Service. “The Tagana team also helped the process of identifying the dead,” he said.

Agus said the LDP team would conduct the assessment on disaster victims in refugee camps. For Lampung province, Agus said the Tagana team and the local Social Service had set up two public kitchens in the parking lot of the Kominfo (Ministry of Communication and Informatics) building and a public kitchen in front of the Lampung provincial administration office. The public kitchens, he said, merged with psychosocial support service.
Until now, said Agus, the number of refugees in the courtyard of the Kominfo Lampung parking lot has reached 5,000 people. “Elderly, children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, mothers with infants or toddlers are priority treatments because they are a vulnerable group,” Agus said.
The Sunda Strait tsunami swept the Banten coastal area and part of Lampung on Saturday night, 22 December. As a result, 222 people died. About 500 people were injured and dozens were declared missing. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicated that the tsunami was caused by an underwater landslide caused by the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau.
