TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that the death toll from the Lombok quake has climbed to 436, with North Lombok being the most-affected area.
“Up to Monday today, the magnitude 7 earthquake elevated the death toll to 436,” said BNPB head of information Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a written statement today.
The magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Lombok on Sunday, August 5, was followed by hundreds of aftershocks. The latest and most powerful aftershock happened on Thursday, August 9.

According to the BNPB reports, the death toll in each affected region is as follows: North Lombok (374), West Lombok (37), Mataram City (9), East Lombok (12), Central Lombok (2) and Denpasar City (2). The official number was collected from the official data provided by village heads and village supervisory non-commissioned officers (Babinsa).
Sutopo explained that most of the deaths were caused by falling debris from building structures during the earthquake. The Lombok quake has injured at least 1,353 people, with North Lombok seing the highest figure of 640. The quake has also forced 352.793 people to take refuge in thousands of shelters throughout the region.
