TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have launched a special operation to battle muggers and snatchers as part of its effort to bring down the number of street crimes. After three days of operation, the police nabbed 73 perpetrators, 27 of whom were shot.
“The number is from the operation from July 3-5,” said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said on Friday, July 6. “Of the 27 criminals who were shot, 3 died while en route to the hospital," he said.
Argo said a total of 387 criminals were arrested during the operation—314 of whom were released after counseling while the rest underwent legal processing. The police seized multiple pieces of evidence in the operation, including motorcycles, bladed weapons and homemade firearms.

"A regionally-autonomous operation to fight street crimes will last for a month," he said.
Argo explained the operation involved 1,000 personnel divided into 16 teams: three teams hailed from the Jakarta Police while the rest from police precincts across the capital.
"We want to make sure that during the Asian Games there is no security disturbance from street crimes," he said.
