TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian students joined in a team called CIMOL has succeeded in winning the Southeast Asian Region Microsoft Imagine Cup by creating a hoax detection application called the Hoax Analyzer. The web-based app is purposed to be a defense system against the widely circulated fake news; it can specifically identify hoaxes contained in any source of information.
CIMOL hopes that their application can assist users in filtering fake information and verifying claims before it can be shared.
Singaporean team called HeartSound was the first runner-up while Opticode team from the Philippines won the second runner-up in the competition.
HeartSound created the S3, a smart device that is applied together with a stethoscope and an electrocardiography machine where it can actively monitor the user’s heartbeat and send notifications to the doctors whenever the device finds irregularities so the patient can receive immediate care.
These three teams will have the opportunity to participate in the international Imagine Cup World Finals that will be held in Seattle in July. As many as 50 teams from all over the world will compete in the global level competition.
The main prize is around one billion rupiah, the chance to be guided by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and a number of funds to help marketing the products.
