TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the National Police and the Attorney General's Office (AGO) would not affect the anti-graft commission's independence.
"[It won't affect KPK's independence] in serving its duty and enforcing the law. For instance, we have an internal mechanism to confirm a certain investigation, and we will follow the mechanism in accordance with KPK's functions," KPK spokesperson Febri Diansyah said at his office in Jakarta on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
Febri revealed that the KPK currently has 90 investigators, and half of them are recruited from the National Police. However, Febri asserted that the investigators must comply with KPK's regulations.
"Our independence is built upon an understanding that regardless the background of the investigators, they are required to follow KPK's rules. Therefore, they are working as KPK's investigators, instead of their original institutions," Febri said.
Earlier, the KPK, the National Police and the AGO signed an MoU on corruption eradication efforts at the National Police Headquarter in South Jakarta on Wednesday, March 29, 2017.
The law enforcement institutions were represented by their own leaders, namely KPK chief Agus Rahardjo, Attorney General HM Prasetyo, and National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian. The MoU is to serve as a guideline for law enforcers to eradicate corruption crimes.
