Asia Pacific SAR Teams to Attend Joint Training in Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from Asia Pacific countries will attend a joint training in Yogyakarta to commemorate the 10th anniversary of earthquake in Yogyakarta and retrace the Merapi Mountain eruption in 2010.

Waluyo Raharjo, head of the Yogyakarta Branch of the National Search and Rescue Agency, said that Yogyakarta was prone to various natural disasters, namely tsunami, earthquake, Merapi eruption, landslide, flooding, and others.

“Yogyakarta is experienced in mitigating disasters,” Waluyo said on Sunday, July 24, 2016.

The 2016 Asia Pacific International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) will be held in Yogyakarta on July 25-29, 2016. Hotel Inna Garuda and PT Gudang Garam Jombor Field in Sleman have been chosen as venues for the coordination and training sessions. A total of 344 participants have registered in the event, consisting of 174 domestic participants and 170 foreign ones.

Rahmawati, spokesperson of the Yogyakarta branch of Basarnas, countries participating in the event are Mongolia, China, Thailand, Japan, Nepal, Cambodia, Switzerland, India, Poland, Iran, South Korea, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore and Malaysia.

The event will be officially opened by Basarnas head FHB Soelistyo, Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, Asia Pacific INSARAG chairman Zhao Ming, and Indonesia OCHA Oliver Lacey Hall.
