TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canada is preparing a serious attempt to legalize marijuana, according to a speech by Canadian Health Minister Jane Philpott on Wednesday, April 20.
Speaking at the UN, Philpott vows to introduce the laws in spring 2017 that will legalize and control cannabis, while continuing to keep it away from children and criminals who seeks profit.
The legalization has become a major campaign promise of the newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. However, the effort to change marijuana’s legal status has stopped months ago since the election.
Canada has offer comprehensive support for medical marijuana users, and compromise that have also been carried out in many US states. Trudeau’s liberal party hold the majority position in the Lower House, so that the bills proposed can possibly pass if it gains full support from the Prime Minister.
The latest opinion poll found that 65 percent of Canadian supports the decriminalization of marijuana. The number has significantly rose in the last few years.
