TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The executive board of Islam Defenders Front’s (FPI) Central Java branch called on law enforcers to eradicate immoral acts ahead of and during the fasting month in Ramadan.
“The FPI will not conduct sweeping raids, but we’re asking law enforcers to do their job so we don’t have to deal with the issue,” Zainal Abidin Petir, head of Central Java branch of FPI’s advocacy team said on Sunday, June 14, 2015.
Zainal said the sweeping raid that caused a conflict between FPI members and residents at Sukoharjo, Central Java, three years ago would not recur. In July 2013, the FPI conducted a sweeping raid against gambling and prostitution at the area. The conflict broke out after FPI’s car hit a motorist who died on the location.
The Semarant District Court sentenced two FPI members Satrio Yuwono and Bayu Agung Wicaksono to four months in prison.
“The sweeping raid was conducted since law enforcers ignored gambling and prostitution practices,” Zainal said.
Ahead of Ramadan this year, Zainal said that the FPI has sent a letter to the Central Java Police calling on the institution to maintain order during the fasting month. Zainal added that the FPI would help police to eradicate immoral acts in Central Java.
“The FPI will not conduct sweeping raids alone because we would not want to be accused of overstepping police authority,” he said.
