TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Indroyono Soesilo, said that all nations in Asia and Africa have supported the attempts to battle illegal fishing. Speaking in between meetings during the Asia-Africa Conference, Minister Indroyono emphasized that the battle against illegal fishing is a global issue.
Indroyono said that he had spoken to the Somalian Foreign Minister, who hoped to gain support in battling illegal fishing and piracy. "Somalia is known for its illegal fishing and pirates," Indroyono said.
Moreover, Indroyono also praised Thailand for its commitment in battling illegal fishing. Thailand has installed Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) on 7,000 of their fishing boats. The country can now monitor its boats, and prevent them from committing illegal activities.
