TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Presidential chief of staff Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said Friday the Palace would leave the nomination of National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti in the hands of the force’s Rank and Promotion Council for High-ranking Officers, known as Wanjakti.

“If the Wanjakti gives a green light, then so be it. They have their own considerations, and if they approve of this, just send [the proposal] and the president will sign it,” he said at the Palace complex on Friday, April 17, 2015.

When asked whether Jokowi might nix Badrodin’s nomination, Luhut said that basically the president would honor the Wanjakti’s decision. “It’s not about rejecting, but if that has been agreed on, the president will respect the decision,” he said.

Luhut, however, said it was still possible that the Wanjakti would nominate Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the police’s deputy chief. “I have no idea, why not? If the Wanjakti gives a go-ahead, we have to respect it,” he said.

Separately, Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, said the police’s next deputy chief must share the same visions as Badrodin’s. “The man should be compatible with and share the same vision as the police chief’s, to make the police force a better institution in the future,” he said.

Tedjo said the National Police would form the Wanjakti immediately to kick off an internal selection for the force’s next deputy chief. The Wanjakti will comprise the National Police chief and a string of police top brass. “The Wanjakti will be established immediately,” he said.
