TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Akbar Tandjung, the head of Functional Group (Golkar) Party advisory council, urged the party to accelerate its national congress for in April 2015. The national congress, Akbar said, would be aimed at establishing the party’s executive board and consolidating the regional head elections.

“If there has to be a national congress, why do we have to wait for 2016? Let’s do it in 2015, hopefully next month, while consolidating the party’s political agendas, such as the regional head elections,” Akbar said at Sahid Sudirman Center, Jakarta, on Saturday, March 14, 2015.

Akbar predicted that the internal conflict might threaten the party’s opportunities in regional head elections and, therefore, could reduce its votes by half.

In 2014, Golkar gained 91 votes. If we can’t run in regional head elections, the votes for the party might drop by half,” Akbar said.

The internal conflict rocking Golkar party escalated after Justice and Human Rights Minister Yassona Laoly last week legalized Agung Lakosno’s Golkar executive board. As a result, Aburizal Bakrie’s camp reported Agung’s camp to the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate for allegedly forging mandate letters from the party’s representative council to the National Congress in Ancol.
