TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Anti-Counterfeiting Society (MIAP) estimated a potential loss of state tax revenue of Rp65.1 trillion per year due to the circulation of counterfeit products. The figure was obtained from the society's survey on the circulation of counterfeit goods in 2014.
MIAP secretary general Justisiari P. Kusuma said the amount of loss the state suffers continues to grow each year. In a 2010 survey, MIAP estimated an economic loss of Rp43.2 trillion.
"In nominal terms, it had increased by almost 1.5 times," Justisiari said when announcing the results of a study on the economic impact of counterfeiting in 2014 in Jakarta, yesterday. MIAP conducted the joint study with the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Economics.
The study found seven industrial commodities that were widely counterfeited last year, namely software, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals or drugs, clothing, leather goods, food and beverage, and printer inks. The most commonly faked product was printer ink, which reached 49.4 percent of all outstanding printer inks.
