Transportation Minister Prepares Safety Rating for Airlines

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister is currently preparing a safety-based rating system for airlines to be announced in February 2015.
According to Jonan, there will be three or five criteria to determine the safety rating of an airline. However, Jonan shortstopped to specify the method that will be employed in the rating system.
“We will try to be as fair as possible [in measuring the airlines’ safety],” Jonan said on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.
Jonan refused to admit that the airlines rating system was initiated after Air Asia’s QZ8501 tragic accident on December 28, 2014.
“Not at all. [The rating system] would be good for all [airlines],” Jonan said.
Jonan said that the Ministry will release airlines safety rating once in three months. The rating system will be prepared by Transportation Ministry’s Directorate General for Air Transportation. Jonan claimed that such rating system had been initiated by former Transportation Minister Jusman Djamal in March 2007.
At that time, the airlines’ safety rating was implemented after two fatal accidents, namely the missing Adam Air 574 that served Surabaya-Manado route on January 1, 2007 and Garuda Indonesia 200 that served Jakarta-Yogyakarta on March 7, 2007.
