Indonesia Sees Fewer Foreign Workers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of foreign workers working in Indonesia in 2014 dropped 6.3 percent over the previous year. Based on the number of Foreigner Employment Permits (IMTA), published the Labor Ministry, there were 64,604 foreign workers working in Indonesia as of October 2014. In 2013, there were 68,957 foreign workers.
According to Hanif, the country with the most foreign workers in Indonesia is China with 15,341 individuals. Next is Japan with 10,183 people workers and South Korea with 7,678 people.
"Looking at the work categories, they mostly work in the service, industry, and agriculture sector," said Hanif.
Starting this year, foreign workers are mandated to be able to speak and understand the Indonesian language. "An Indonesian proficiency test will be a mandatory requirement for foreign workers," he said.
In 2015, Indonesia is expected to have 158,485 foreign workers. Meanwhile, 1,518,687 Indonesian workers are predicted to make money working overseas.
