TEMPO.CO, JakartaAfter the first trial in the implementation of the electronic road pricing (ERP) system on Jalan Sudirman in South Jakarta last July, the city administration will conduct a second trial in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on September 30.

According to Transportation Agency head Muhammad Akbar, Norwegian-based company Q-Free has finished constructing the foundation for the ERP gate.

“The gantry will be located near the Setiabudi Building. Hopefully we can start the [second] trial on September 30,” Akbar said at City Hall in Central Jakarta, as quoted by Antara News.

The Jakarta administration is aiming to implement the ERP system because its three-in-one system enacted in 1994 has proven ineffective in easing traffic congestion.

Motorists cheat the system by paying people known as jockeys to increase the number of passengers in their cars.

Previously, Sweden-based road telematics company Kapsch TrafficCom conducted a trial and installed an ERP gantry on Jalan Sudirman.

However, the gantry had trouble detecting passing cars’ police number plates if they were bent, framed or modified. The company has stated that it is working on upgrading its system.
