TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maria Sharapova managed to pass the third round of the US Open after defeating 2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki of Germany in two straight sets 6-2 and 6-4.
The Russian admitted that Lisicki gave fierce opposition in the encounter that lasted an hour and 40 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium this morning.
"She was a really tough opponent, a very aggressive big server. I just tried to concentrate on my return," said Sharapova to BBC. "I wasn't serving as well as I wanted to."
Sharapova is set to play ten-seeded Caroline Wozniacki who paved up her way past Andrea Petkovic 6-3, 6-2.
On the other side of the court, former world number one Venus Williams was upset by Sara Errani of Italy 0-6, 6-0, and 6(5)-7.
"I've never heard the crowd that strong, I was shaking," said 27-year-old Errani, referring to the supporters of the host nation. "It was unbelievably good. I will remember forever that moment. I don't know why I did that. I was not angry. It was the adrenaline in my body."
