TEMPO.CO, New York - The 2014 US Open draw on Thursday has put top-seeded Serena Williams against 18-year-old fellow American tennis player Taylor Townsend in the first round. The fourth series of 2014 Grand Slam starts on Monday local time, at Flushing Meadow, New York.
Williams, who is turning 33 on September 26, is predicted to have a convenient journey on the tournament until the fourth round where China’s Zhang Shuai is predicted to cross her path. Williams is looking to claim her sixth US Open and 18th Grand Slam trophy.
In men's single draw, Novak Djokovic is set to play unseeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in the opener. Schwartzman has never recorded a significant achievement in his Grand Slam history. Many predict that Djokovic will roll pass the Argentine pretty easy.
The top-seeded is also predicted to have smooth path in the early rounds, although Federer is slightly more fortunate. The Serb will likely have to get past John Isner and either Andy Murray or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the semifinals while second-seeded Federer has Ivo Karlovic and Grigor Dimitrov. The Swiss is 11-1 over Karlovic and has beaten the young Dimitrov in their one and only meeting.
The 2014 US Open will be missing the world number two in men’s single, Rafael Nadal, who had announced his absence due to wrist injury.
