TEMPO.CO, Barcelona - Spanish football club giant Barcelona has confirmed a four-year contract with Valencia captain Jeremy Mathieu. The Catalans posted a statement on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, that Mathieu has joined the club in a 20 million Poundsterling deal.
Mathieu is the fourth player brought by Luis Enrique in this summer's transfer window. Earlier, Barcelona had purchased two goalkeepers; Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Claudio Bravo; a midfielder Ivan Rakitic and attacker Luis Suarez.
Although Mathieu is naturally a left defender, the 30-year-old player is predicted to take a major role in the defensive line. Barca has only two central defenders: Gerard Pique and Marc Bartra, and a midfielder who frequently plays as a defender Javier Mascherano. Barcelona also still has Jordi Alba and Adriano Corriea as left defenders.
