TEMPO.CO, Bekasi – A minimarket on Jl. Raya Pilar, Cikarang Utara district, Bekasi regency, caught fire early on Monday morning at around 02.40, sending a wave of panic to a group of people attending a communal screening of the 2014 World Cup final held in the vicinity.
“People were watching the soccer match when suddenly smoke appeared,” said Hari, 27, an eyewitness. He added the smoke was billowing from a nearby Indomaret minimarket that was already closed at around 11.00 p.m., and that the locals immediately called the fire department for help.
Three firefighter units came to the scene shortly and the fire was put out after two hours. “The hotspot was in the middle of the minimarket,” a firefighter said.
Cikarang Utara Police crime investigation unit chief Adj. Comr. Boby Kusumawardhana said the police had yet to determine the cause of the fire but suspected it was due to a short-circuit. “We are still investigating this,” he said.
There was no reported casualty in the incident.
