TEMPO.CO, Kediri - A group of female activists of the Association for Kediri Women (P3KK) staged a protest to commemorate the Kartini Day on April 21 in Kediri, East Java.
“Women are still subject to violence and harassment,” P3KK spokesperson Sri Rambat Widodo said on Monday.
The group, consisting of around 50 people were seen carrying banners and posters on the sidewalk of the city hall’s street. They said the government had failed to protect women and children in the city as evident in the high figures of violence and sexual harassment against them.
Dyah Eruwati, a spokesperson of Baptis Kediri Hospital who joined the protest, said the hospital was the only one providing counseling sessions for victims of sexual harassments, whereas the government should have been the one responsible for this.
She added the hospital had treated 30 cases of violence and sexual harassment by far. Dyah said most of the victims were children and that the crimes were committed by people in their surroundings, such as their fathers or neighbors.
“They need to heal their psychological wounds,” she added.
