TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Poempida Hidayatulloh from Commission IX of the House of Representatives urged the Foreign Ministry to save Satinah from the death penalty in Saudi Arabia by paying the Rp 21 billion 'retribution' demanded by the Saudi government.
"If the government remains silent, the House will initiate [a fundraising program] for Satinah," said Poempida. He added that the protection mechanism towards migrant workers must be revised.
Saudi Arabia sentenced Satinah to death in 2007 for killing her employer. Satinah claimed to have killed the woman in retaliation for the constant abuse she had received. She is scheduled to be beheaded, possibly publicly, on April 5, 2014.
Saudi Arabia's courts system allows convicted killers to escape execution by giving money to the victim's family.
