TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has acknowledged one of the causes for fluctuating chicken prices in the farm level, which is caused by irregular chain of poultry trading system. The Agriculture Ministry's livestock and animal health director general, Syukur Iwantoro, said the chain of poultry trading system is deteriorating and it requires handling.
"Besides deteriorating chain of system, the supply chain's infrastructure, transportation and facilities need serious improvements," he told Tempo, Friday, March 21.
Iwantoro agreed with trimming the system by selling slaughtered chickens straight from breeders. This is because, besides the risk of bird flu, selling live chickens could make markets dirty. "It is better to slaughter chickens at farms and sell them to the markets in frozen forms, it is guaranteed to be healthier, more hygienic, and also decrease the emergence of bird flu," he said.
Therefore, according to Iwantoro, the government and farmers have agreed to build slaughterhouses. "Every breeder with the business scale of 500,000 chickens is required to provide a chicken slaughterhouse," he said.
