TEMPO.CO, Malang - German Culture Institution the Goethe Institute, has expressed its interest to publish a book about Kartini in Germany. Several German publishers also plan to publish several books to honor Kartini, who is considered as the women emancipation heroine.
Christel Mahnke, Head of Information and Librarian for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand Region of the Institute, said that he welcome any Indonesian writers who are willing to conduct a research on Kartini. He also stated that if no writers are interested, the Institute will translate Kartini's letters that were included in the 'Letters of a Javanese Princess' book.
In preparation for the book project, the Goethe Institute has initiated a discussion with former President B.J. Habibie on recognizing Kartini's role in Indonesian history, along with the details of the book that will be published.
Mahnke explained that Kartini played an essential role in the struggle for gender equality.
"She stepped out of her comfort zone and made changes," he said.
