TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission questioned former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati in Washington DC, USA, yesterday. The Executive Director of the World Bank was questioned about the disbursement of a short-term financing facility (FPJP) and the Bank Century bailout.
KPK spokesman Johan Budi said yesterday said the questioning will take place at the Indonesian Embassy. Johan said the commission three investigators arrived in Washington this week, to question her about the Rp6.7 trillion ($690 million) bailout.
Sri Mulyani was among several Indonesian officials who authorized the bailout of mid-sized bank, Bank Century, during the 2008 financial crisis. At that time, Sri was Finance Minister as well as Chair of the Financial Stability Committee.
The total fund disbursed to save the bank was much higher than what was deemed necessary to prevent its default. The bailout money was allegedly tapped off by well-connected shareholders.
The decision to examine Sri in the United States is to speed up investigation process. This was not KPK's first examination conducted abroad. Budi said that Sri's testimony would be used in the trial of Bank Indonesia's former deputy governor, Budi Mulya, who was named a suspect in the case last November.
