A Diver Dies during SAR Operation for Lion Air Crash

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A diver from Indonesia Diving Rescue Team (IDRT), Syahrul Anto, died during the searching operation for the downed Lion Air JT 610 in the waters of Karawang, West Java. Anto was believed to die due to an accident while diving.


The commander of the Navy SAR Task Force Col. Isswarto confirmed the news on Saturday, Nov 3. According to him, the incident occurred on Friday, Nov 2, at around 5 pm local time.


Anto was unconscious when rushed into Koja Regional Hospital for medical treatment.

Despite detail of the death cause is still unknown, Isswarto suspected Anto died due to decompression sickness, a medical condition that results when sudden decompression causes nitrogen bubbles to form in the tissues of the body, blocks the bloodstream and nervous system. The condition is similar to a deadly stroke.
