TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The pedicab (becak) drivers in the Teluk Gong area, North Jakarta, who were officially registered, complained about the illegal becak drivers operating around Teluk Gong Market on Jalan K, Pejagalan Village, Penjaringan District, North Jakarta.

Sriyono, 51-year-old, a becak driver who has been officially registered with the Transportation Agency, complained that many illegal becak drivers were not registered, but they were operating in the Teluk Gong area.

“We hope they will be disciplined. Or if it is necessary, legalized,” Sriyono said on Jalan L Teluk Gong, Wednesday, October 10.

According to Sriyono, the registered becak drivers have complied with the government's regulation, they did not wait for the customer on the side of the highway or protocol. Because, the government has established the Integrated Becak Shelter in three locations in Teluk Gong.

One of the shelters was the Integrated Becak Shelter on Jalan K. At that location, dozens of registered becak drivers including Sriyono always waited in the alley.

“We are not allowed to wait on Jalan K. We have to wait in the alley on Jalan L. The illegal becak drivers, many of them wait on the edge of Jalan K,” he said.

He said that because there were still many illegal becak drivers who had not obeyed the rules, they finally affected Sriyono and his friends. Because the registered becak drivers that wait in the alley have fewer passengers.

“We rely on customers. If we want to find customers, it is more crowded on the side of the road,” Sriyono said.

But the Jakarta administration does not remain silent to discipline the illegal becak drivers. The Public Order Agency often disciplined the illegal and registered becak drivers if they waited on the side of the highway or protocol. "Usually the becak is taken to the village office,” he said.
